Description

Wood-Carved Icon of the Panagia of Pelmatos

A magnificent wood-carved icon featuring the unique depiction of the Panagia of Pelmatos. The original icon is housed in the Monastery of Pochaev and is named in remembrance of the miracle of the Virgin Mary’s appearance in Pochaev in 1240. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to the monks in the form of a column of fire, leaving the imprint of her foot on the rock where she stood. Over time, this footprint became a place of pilgrimage for the local population and the monks due to the healing properties of the water that dripped from the rock.

The Dormition of the Theotokos Monastery of Pochaev is an Orthodox monastery, which for centuries was the most important spiritual center of Orthodox Christianity in western Ukraine. The first written mention of the monastery dates back to 1527, although according to local tradition, it was founded around three centuries earlier, during the Mongol invasions, by several monks who fled from other areas, including records of monks from Mount Athos.

It is a unique piece of art created using the “pressing” technique, and the wood used is lime tree wood. It is crafted with respect for Orthodox Christian Tradition.

After the initial processing and sanding of the wood, it is painted with eco-friendly paint, followed by a process of pest control to ensure the wood remains in excellent condition for over 100 years.
