Description

Wood-Carved Icon of the Panagia Eptaspathi

An amazing wood-carved icon of the Panagia Eptaspathi, depicted with three swords on each shoulder and a seventh piercing her heart from below. This representation highlights her immense sorrow for all that she experienced, particularly the loss of her beloved Son. The Panagia Eptaspathi is a particularly rare depiction of the Theotokos, also known as the Panagia of the Seven Sorrows.

According to Christian tradition, the seven swords that seem to pierce the body of the Virgin Mary represent the sorrows she endured throughout her life, culminating in the Crucifixion of her Son. In the Bible, the number seven typically signifies completeness and abundance, but in this context, it symbolizes the boundless sorrow of the Theotokos. A Russian tradition also mentions that icons with this specific representation are often placed at the entrance of homes to protect them from envy, the evil eye, and sickness.
