A wood-carved icon depicting Christ Pantocrator, an exceptional example of the monks’ skill in woodcraft. The term “Pantocrator” means “Almighty” or “Ruler of All,” referring to one who holds all power and authority. The image of the Pantocrator Jesus is traditionally painted in the central dome (the “troulus”) of Byzantine churches. In churches that lack a dome, such as those built in the basilica style, the image is painted at the center of the ceiling. This depiction of Christ is one of the most iconic themes in Byzantine and post-Byzantine art.
