In Orthodox Christianity, Jesus is likened to the Bridegroom because in His person, a sacred “marriage” takes place—the union of God and humanity—while also embodying the coexistence of both God and man in one person. This is why Christ is also called the “Bridegroom of the Church.” Furthermore, the relationship of the husband and wife is compared by the Apostle Paul to the relationship between Christ and the Church. In the person of Christ, we see His limitless love for humanity, for all of mankind, because only through this love could He make such a sacrifice—becoming a humble man, suffering, and ultimately being crucified.
