Description

Woodcarved Icon of Saint Nicholas

An impressive hand-carved wood icon depicting Saint Nicholas, one of the greatest saints of Orthodoxy. Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara, Lycia, to devout parents. He lived during the reigns of emperors Diocletian (284-304 AD), Maximian (286-305 AD), and Constantine the Great. Orphaned at a young age, he inherited a large fortune from his parents, which he distributed to help those in need.

He then dedicated himself to the ascetic life, later being honored with the title of Archbishop of Myra. He is particularly revered throughout Greece by those at sea. He is the patron saint of sailors, both the Navy and Merchant Marine. In Byzantine art and iconography, he is often depicted saving sailors at sea. He is the patron saint of cities such as Alexandroupolis, Volos, Galaxidi, Kozani, Polygyros, Sitia, and Syros.

Woodcarved Icon: Features

This particular woodcarved icon belongs to a special category of icons—works of art known for their exquisite detail in depicting saints. It is a unique masterpiece created using the “pressing” technique, made from lime wood. The icon is crafted in accordance with Orthodox Christian tradition.

After the initial processing and sanding of the wood, it is painted with eco-friendly colors, followed by a pest control treatment to preserve the wood in perfect condition for over 100 years.
