Description

Wood-carved Icon of Saint Nicholas

A wood-carved icon depicting Saint Nicholas, one of the greatest saints of Orthodoxy. Saint Nicholas was born in the 3rd century AD in Patara, Lycia, to devout parents. He lived during the reigns of Emperors Diocletian (284–304 AD), Maximian (286–305 AD), and Constantine the Great. He was orphaned at a young age and inherited a large fortune from his parents, which he generously distributed to help those in need. He then dedicated himself to the ascetic life and later became honored with the title of Archbishop of Myra.

During the persecutions of Diocletian, he suffered torture. However, when Emperor Constantine the Great ascended to the throne, all Christians were freed, and Nicholas was restored to the archbishopric. He is especially honored throughout the Greek world by the people of the sea. He is the patron saint of sailors, the Navy, and the Merchant Navy.
