Woodcarved Icon of Saint Nektarios

Saint Nektarios, also known as Nektarios of Pentapolis or Nektarios of Aegina, was a beloved hierarch and shepherd. In 1904, he founded a women’s monastery in Aegina, where he personally took over its administration when he withdrew there in 1908 after resigning from the Rizarios School. The inhabitants of Aegina considered him a saint even before his death, a recognition primarily attributed to two events.
Saint Nektarios first healed a demon-possessed young man, and later, villagers visited him asking to pray for rain on the island, as there had been a prolonged drought for almost three years. He conducted a liturgy with all the islanders present, and on the same day, it began to rain. His grace and reputation continued to grow, and within four years, the monastery expanded to 15 nuns, up from the initial four. Forty years after his passing, he was officially recognized as a saint on April 20, 1961, due to the evaluation of his miracles, as well as his great pastoral and ecclesiastical work.

This particular woodcarved icon belongs to a special category of images — works of art renowned for the exceptional details in the depiction of saints. It is a unique artwork created using the “pressing” technique and is made from linden wood. The icon is crafted in accordance with Orthodox Christian tradition.
After the initial processing and sanding of the wood, it is painted with eco-friendly colors, and then a pest control treatment is applied to preserve the wood in excellent condition for over 100 years.
