The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary Gorgoepikoos has been at the Holy Monastery of Dochiariou on Mount Athos since 1646.

The most well-known miraculous icon of Mount Athos after the Virgin Mary Portaitissa and the Virgin Mary of “Axion Esti” is the Virgin Mary Gorgoepikoos. Her name means “She who listens quickly,” and she is honored on October 1st. Through her miraculous works, the Virgin Mary constantly proves that she listens and swiftly responds to those who call upon her with faith and devotion. Her Grace performs countless miracles, not only on Mount Athos but also outside it.

According to tradition, whenever the monk in charge of the monastery’s table would pass in front of the icon holding lit torches, he would hear a voice saying: “Do not pass by here and darken the place with smoke.” This incident occurred repeatedly, and shortly afterward, the monk lost his sight. He then realized his mistake and set up a prayer desk in front of the icon, asking the Virgin for forgiveness and to restore his sight, which she did.

The Mother of our Lord quickly cares for the salvation of all and radiates grace to all who call upon her with faith, hope, and love.
