Description

Image of Christ Pantocrator on Naturally Aged Wood

This image, depicting Christ Pantocrator, is an excellent example of the skills of the monks at Mount Athos.

The image of Christ Pantocrator is typically painted on the central dome (the “trompe”) of all Byzantine churches. In churches without a dome, in the basilica style, it is depicted at the center of the ceiling.

The word “Pantocrator” means “Almighty” or “Ruler of All,” signifying the one who holds all power. This specific depiction of Christ is one of the traditional themes in Byzantine and post-Byzantine art.

This exceptional image has been created on naturally aged wood from a cell at Mount Athos that was renovated. This piece of wood, which may have originally served as a door leaf in a cell, has now been repurposed into the base for this stunning piece of art.

Note: As the image is handcrafted and the wood is worked by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but these will not affect the depiction.
