Icon of the Deesis on Naturally Aged Wood
This icon depicts three of the most significant holy figures in the Orthodox Church: Christ, the Virgin Mary, and Saint John the Baptist.
In Byzantine and generally Orthodox iconography, the “Deesis” refers to the depiction of Christ surrounded by other saints, most often the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Baptist.
In this icon, created by a monk from Mount Athos, Christ is portrayed in the center, with the Virgin Mary to His right and Saint John the Baptist to His left. Both figures appear to intercede on behalf of humanity, asking Christ for the salvation of mankind, acting as mediators for the faithful who pray to them. For this reason, this type of icon is commonly known as the “Deesis”.
The naturally aged wood used for this Deesis icon comes from Mount Athos and has been soaked with the prayers of the monks.
Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
The icon is available upon request.
