Description
Image of Christ the Bridegroom on Naturally Aged Wood
A beautiful icon of Jesus portrayed as the Bridegroom.
In Orthodox Christianity, Jesus is compared to the Bridegroom because in His person, a sacred “marriage” takes place—the union of God and humanity—while simultaneously revealing the coexistence of both God and man. This is why Christ is also referred to as “The Bridegroom of the Church.”
Furthermore, the relationship between husband and wife is compared by the Apostle Paul to the relationship between Christ and the Church. In the person of Christ, we see His boundless love for humanity, for all people, because only with such love could He make such a sacrifice: to become a humble man, to suffer, and ultimately to be crucified.
The history of this particular icon begins long before the monk iconographer depicted Christ the Bridegroom. It is a unique work of art, as even the wood used as its base is a piece of Mount Athos itself. It comes from a restored Athonite cell. Specifically, it is a piece of old wood that “remained” from restoration work, was cut, and preserved by the monks, and later became the base for this unique image. A piece of wood with a rich history, as it once served as a beam, door, or even part of a piece of furniture from a monk’s cell on Mount Athos. Today, however, after proper restoration, it has been transformed into an icon that not only depicts Christ the Bridegroom but also “carries” with it a small piece of the history of the Holy Mountain.
Important Note:
Since the image is handmade and the wood is hand-processed, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
