Icon of Christ Blessing with New Martyrs on Naturally Aged Wood
The saints serve as bright signposts on the journey of life for every Christian. Especially the New Martyrs are shining examples for Christians of our time. With bravery and patience, they endured terrible martyrdoms to preserve their unwavering faith in the Lord.
In this unique icon, which is an original and inspired composition, Christ Blessing is depicted at the center, surrounded by a group of New Martyrs.
For many years, Mount Athos has produced high-quality and interesting works, bringing this historic place closer to the faithful. This tradition continues in many creative ways. After the necessary renovation of several cells and sketes, old woods that had been used for doors, large tables, ceilings, or staircases were found in disuse. These woods, worn by time but still alive, were carefully preserved and transformed into icons.
On the restored old wood, the image of Christ Blessing with a group of New Martyrs was placed on canvas, which was then aged to resemble the natural wear and tear of time as if it had been part of the original artwork. The sculpted halo made of cast iron gives the icon the aesthetic of the icons in chapels from 100 years ago.
Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
