Description

Icon of the Theotokos Acheiropoietos on Naturally Aged Wood

The Acheiropoietos is mentioned in written sources as the church of the Virgin Theotokos Acheiropoietos, even referred to as the Great Church of the Theotokos. The title “Acheiropoietos” (“not made by human hands”) first appears in a document from 1320 and is associated with the venerated icon of the Virgin that was kept in the church. The church itself was built upon the ruins of Roman baths during the 5th century.

This was the first church the Ottomans converted into a mosque in 1430, when they invaded and conquered Thessaloniki. Almost all of its frescoes and mosaics were completely destroyed. From the rich sculptural architectural decoration of the church, the most notable are the elaborate Ionic capitals, dating from the 5th century and originating from workshops in Constantinople.

A special silkscreen icon on wood of natural origin, preserved by the monks of Mount Athos, using wood reclaimed from a renovated Athonite cell.

Through “Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons can be held by people who long to keep a piece of the living tradition of Mount Athos.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, though not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
