The Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, also known as Levi, is one of the apostles and a disciple of Jesus Christ.

The name Matthew comes from the Hebrew name Matityahu and is a shortened form of the name Mattathiah, or Mattaniah, which means “gift of Yahweh” or “given by God,” similar to the Greek name Theodoros.

Matthew was from Galilee and worked as a tax collector. One day, as Jesus was passing through Capernaum, where Matthew lived, He saw him and, knowing his heart, asked him to follow Him. Without a second thought, Matthew left his work and from then on was by His side.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
