Description

Image of Saint James on Naturally Aged Wood

The Apostle James was the son of Zebedee and Salome, and the elder brother of the Evangelist John. He also hailed from Bethsaida in Galilee. He worked in fishing alongside John, with both of them often accompanied by their father and several workers. They owned their own boat, and the Apostle Peter was also their partner.
James, together with John, displayed great zeal as disciples of the Lord. For this reason, they were called the “Sons of Thunder” and witnessed many significant events that the other Apostles did not experience. They were exclusive witnesses to the Transfiguration of the Lord, saw the miraculous resurrection of the daughter of Jairus, the synagogue leader, and were blessed to be invited by Jesus to be with Him during His hours of prayer and agony in the Garden of Gethsemane. This closeness evidently led James and his brother John to request, through their mother, a place of honor in the Lord’s earthly kingdom, misunderstanding the mission of the Messiah. The two disciples sought glory from Christ based on human criteria, thinking that His Kingdom was tangible.

The naturally aged wood, sourced from a restored Athonite cell, on which the icon is crafted, gives it a unique aesthetic and collectible value, while simultaneously conveying a piece of its long history outside the Athonite polity.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available by special order.
