After the betrayal and hanging of Judas, and following the Ascension of the Lord, the eleven disciples were gathered in the Upper Room with the Virgin Mary. Then Peter suggested that another should be chosen in place of Judas from among the men who had followed and served Christ. The proposal was accepted, and two candidates were put forward: Joseph, called Barsabbas, and Matthias. They then cast lots, giving us all an example of entrusting every election to God, and prayed together as follows: “You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show clearly whom you have chosen from these two, to take the place in this ministry and apostleship.” In other words: You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, reveal clearly the one you have chosen, one of these two, to take on the office of apostolic ministry. Subsequently, the lot fell to Matthias. And so he was added to the eleven apostles.

From Matthias’s later life, we know that he preached the Gospel in Ethiopia, where he ended his life martyrdom.
