Icon of the Root of Jesse on Naturally Aged Wood

An icon of the Root of Jesse, a beautiful theme, with the Virgin Mary depicted as the trunk, holding Jesus in her arms, while at her feet lies the body of Jesse, the father of King David, from whose lineage Christ descends. On the branches surrounding the Virgin, various figures can be seen, mainly ancestors, but also prophets who foretold about the Theotokos in the Old Testament.

This is a symbolic iconographic representation, known in Byzantine iconography, that depicts the genealogical tree of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. On the branches of the tree, the depictions of ancestors and prophets are arranged in genealogical order from bottom to top, that is, from Jesse and David to the Virgin Mary and Jesus Christ.

This particular icon, like all the icons in the same category, has been created on naturally aged wood, which comes from a renovated cell of Mount Athos.
