This is an extraordinary icon, in which the Virgin Mary Holding the Child is seated on a throne, surrounded by a multitude of Saints who appear to praise Her Grace. The name “Holding the Child” refers to the care and affection shown by the Theotokos for the young Jesus, whom She holds in Her arms.

The monk who created this icon used a piece of naturally aged wood, which for many decades was part of a cell in Mount Athos.
