Icon of the Lamentation of the Virgin Mary on Naturally Aged Wood
Beautiful icon on naturally aged wood from Mount Athos, depicting a relatively rare theme: the Lamentation of the Virgin Mary as she receives the lifeless body of her Son.
In this icon, the Theotokos, immediately after the Descent from the Cross, holds the lifeless body of Christ and mourns His death, as He sacrificed Himself for the salvation of mankind. Here, the Virgin is depicted as a mother deeply grieving for the pain and death of her only Son.
The Theotokos is shown holding Christ’s lifeless body, supporting His head with one hand. Her face expresses deep sorrow, profound grief, and the sense of loss felt by a mother who has just lost her child.
Representations of the Virgin holding the dead Christ are works of post-Byzantine artists, especially Cretan painters, combining Byzantine and Renaissance iconographic elements.
As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
