A special icon of the Virgin Mary of the Lamentation on naturally aged wood from a renovated Athonite cell.

The Virgin Mary of the Lamentation was painted in 1972 on Mount Athos by Elder Ioasaph and was later sent to Nea Olynthos in Halkidiki. According to tradition, the Virgin Mary healed a child in Nea Olynthos, and the child’s father made a vow and eventually built a church in the area.

However, he didn’t know which miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary to dedicate the church to, and time passed without him being able to make a decision. At some point, according to the tradition, the Theotokos appeared to him in a dream and asked him to go to Mount Athos, find Elder Ioasaph, and ask him to paint the Virgin Mary of the Lamentation. This was done, and the icon was eventually sent with Elder Ioasaph’s blessings to Nea Olynthos in Halkidiki.

The Virgin Mary of the Lamentation is celebrated on August 23.

The naturally aged wood used in these particular icons comes from renovated Athonite cells and carries the blessings of the monks who lived there. They bear a small piece of Mount Athos’ centuries-old history and can be found in the rich collection of “Athonite Heritage.”

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
