The original icon of the Weeping Virgin has an incredible history and a series of miracles that follow it.

As is well known, it was painted in 1972 at Mount Athos by Elder Ioasaph and was later sent to Nea Olynthos in Halkidiki. According to tradition, the Virgin healed a child in Nea Olynthos, and the child’s father made a vow and eventually built a church in the area. However, he didn’t know which miraculous icon of the Virgin to dedicate the church to, and time passed without him being able to make a decision. At one point, according to tradition, the Theotokos appeared to him in a dream and asked him to go to Mount Athos, find Elder Ioasaph, and ask him to paint the Weeping Virgin. This was done, and the icon was eventually sent with Elder’s blessings to Nea Olynthos in Halkidiki.

The Weeping Virgin is celebrated on August 23rd.

The naturally aged wood used for this particular icon, with the rare depiction of the Virgin, comes from a cell at Mount Athos that was renovated due to damage caused by the passage of time and the elements of nature. The old wood, which was replaced, was gathered by the monks and, after being restored using special techniques and the incredible skills of the monks, became the base for creating icons.

It can make a wonderful gift for our loved ones, as it carries a small piece of the history of Mount Athos.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
