Description

Icon of the Virgin Platytera of the Heavens on Naturally Aged Wood

The Virgin as Platytera of the Heavens is depicted in the upper interior part of the central apse (Sanctuary) of the churches of the Orthodox Church. The Virgin is usually shown with her arms open, holding the Christ Child in her embrace. The name Platytera of the Heavens comes from the characteristic verse of the Akathist Hymn, “Rejoice, O shelter of the world, broader than the clouds.”

The Virgin’s epithets are believed to exceed 500 and originate either from miracles attributed to her, hymns, regions where churches and monasteries dedicated to her name have been built, or from the way she is depicted in icons.

The Athonite monks, with their wisdom, find ways to reuse even materials that appear to have no use or are old, giving them new life. Thus, the wood found in disuse after the renovation of old cells is transformed into unique icons.

Through the “Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons can be found in the hands of people who long to hold a piece of the living Athonite tradition.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
