Icon of the Virgin Mary Platytera on Naturally Aged Wood

The Virgin Mary as “Platytera of the Heavens” is traditionally depicted in the upper interior part of the central apse of the Holy Altar (Sanctuary) in Orthodox churches. She is usually portrayed seated on a throne holding Jesus Christ in her arms, surrounded by angelic hosts. However, she is also often depicted standing with her hands outstretched and slightly raised. The title “Platytera of the Heavens” originates from a line in the Akathist Hymn: *”Rejoice, shelter of the world, wider than the heavens.”*
