Icon of the Virgin Mary Platytera on Naturally Aged Wood

The Virgin Mary as the Platytera of the Heavens is depicted in the upper inner part of the central apse of the Holy Altar (Sanctuary) in Orthodox churches. The Virgin is usually shown seated on a throne, holding the infant Jesus Christ in her arms. However, she is also often depicted standing, with her arms extended and slightly raised.

The name “Platytera of the Heavens” comes from the famous verse of the Akathist Hymn: “Rejoice, O shelter of the world, more spacious than the heavens.”

The monks of Mount Athos deeply venerate the historical and spiritual significance of the place where they live and practice. They strive to use everything around them for the glory of God, including even the worn-out or seemingly useless materials. Thus, the wood found in disuse after the renovation of old cells was skillfully transformed into beautiful icons. In this way, they continue to live and pass on the blessing of Mount Athos.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
