Description

Icon – Panagia Paramythia on Naturally Aged Wood – UNIQUE

A special serigraph of Panagia Paramythia.

The original icon of Panagia Paramythia is housed in the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos. According to Christian tradition, in 807 AD, pirates secretly landed on the beach of the monastery and waited hidden for the gates to open so they could attack. However, after the conclusion of Matins, the abbot heard the Virgin Mary speaking to him: “Do not open the gates of the monastery today, but go up to the walls and drive the pirates away.” Looking at the icon, he saw the Divine Child stretch out His hand and cover His Mother’s lips, saying: “Do not, my Mother, let them be punished as they deserve.” But the Virgin, holding her Son’s hand, repeated the same words. Indeed, the monks were saved from the pirates, and, as tradition has it, the expressions of the faces and the posture of both the Virgin and the Child changed from that moment on in the icon.

The piece of wood used as the base for this icon comes from restoration work on a cell in Mount Athos, which, after special processing by the monks, was given a new purpose. The cracks in the old wood where the image of Panagia Paramythia on canvas is mounted tell the story of its life on Mount Athos. They conceal its previous use, but now, as it has been transformed into an icon, its past no longer matters. The entire composition respects the age of the wood and faithfully conveys the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos.

These individual collectible works are exclusively available from “Athonite Heritage,” with the hope that they will carry the blessings of their long life in the Garden of the Panagia.

The icon is available upon order.
