The monks of Mount Athos, with their craftsmanship and dedication, create works of unique value using even humble, worn materials. Thus, another masterpiece of Byzantine art was created, the icon of the Virgin Mary Hodegetria on naturally aged wood from a restored Athonite cell.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is processed manually, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

Description

Icon of the Virgin Mary Hodegetria on Naturally Aged Wood

The icon depicting the Virgin Mary Hodegetria is historically the first image of the Church. It was crafted by the Evangelist Luke himself. According to tradition, Evangelist Luke painted the image of the Theotokos while she was still alive. The Virgin Mary received it with great joy and blessed it, saying, “May the grace of the one who was born from me be with her.”

The icon of the Virgin Hodegetria was preserved in Palestine. When Theodosius II was emperor, it was sent to Constantinople by Empress Eudocia as a gift to Theodosius’ sister, Saint Pulcheria. Saint Pulcheria placed it in the monastery she had built, the Monastery of the Hodegetria. A replica of this historical icon is located in the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos on Mount Athos.

This exceptional silkscreen of the Virgin Mary Hodegetria was crafted by a monk on naturally aged wood from a restored Athonite cell. The cracks in the old wood, on which the icon is placed, testify to its years of life on Mount Athos.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is processed manually, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
