Description

Icon – Panagia Odigitria on Naturally Aged Wood

A unique serigraph of the Panagia Odigitria.

The original icon of Panagia Odigitria was initially housed at the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi on Mount Athos, from where it mysteriously disappeared several times. According to tradition, the icon of the Odigitria disappeared twice during 1730. In both cases, there was no violation of the monastery, and the icon was eventually found at the Holy Monastery of Xenophon. Eventually, the fathers of the Vatopedi Monastery realized that the icon was disappearing in a miraculous manner, and they did not wish to oppose the will of the Panagia. Since then, the icon of Panagia Odigitria has remained within the Katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Xenophon.

Using old woods that have had a life on Mount Athos for many years, the monks create unique works of art. A renovation project led to the collection of these naturally aged woods, resulting in a large collection of unique and collectible Athonite icons.

On this carefully preserved wood, the monks placed the serigraph of Panagia Odigitria and artificially aged the image to match perfectly with the wood that hosts it. The aura of Byzantine heritage through time reaches the present day.

The monks entrusted these works to “Athonite Heritage,” which, in turn, presents them to the public.

The icon is available upon order.
