Description

Serigraphy of the Virgin Hodegetria on Naturally Aged Wood

The Athonite monk has crafted a beautiful icon depicting the Virgin Hodegetria.

According to one version, the Virgin Hodegetria was originally located in the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi, but it mysteriously disappeared twice during the year 1730. On both occasions, the icon was eventually found at the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos. After this miraculous disappearance, the fathers of Vatopedi did not wish to oppose the decision of the Theotokos. Since then, the icon of the Virgin Hodegetria has been housed in the Katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Xenophontos.

According to Christian tradition, the icon of the Virgin Hodegetria is historically the first icon of the Church, and it is said to have been painted by the Evangelist Luke himself. It is attributed with numerous miracles, one of which occurred in 717 AD when it helped save Constantinople from the Arabs.

The piece of wood used for this artwork comes from renovation works on a cell of Mount Athos. The grain, cracks, knots, and other features of the wood remain unchanged, reflecting not only its age but also its daily use. The entire composition respects the age of the wood and faithfully conveys the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
