Description

Icon of the Jerusalem Virgin on Naturally Aged Wood

This icon depicting the Virgin of Jerusalem has been crafted on naturally aged wood from Mount Athos, with the head of the Theotokos, as well as that of the Child Jesus, adorned with carved halos, adding a special aesthetic value.

The original is located at the Sacred Shrine of the Theotokos’ Tomb in Gethsemane, Jerusalem. According to church tradition, the icon of the Jerusalem Virgin was painted after divine intervention in the Holy Land. For this reason, the original icon is also called “Achieropita,” meaning it was not created by human hands.

The Miraculous Holy Icon of the Virgin “THE JERUSALEM VIRGIN” was painted in the 19th century miraculously. It bears the date 1870 and has the following history:

At that time, there was a nun-painter named Tatiana from the Russian Holy Monastery of the Myrrh-Bearing Saint Mary Magdalene, located at the foot of the Mount of Olives across from Jerusalem. One night, while Tatiana was sleeping, an unknown nun visited her cell and said: “Sister Tatiana, I have come for you to paint me.” Tatiana replied: “Bless me, sister, but I am an iconographer, not a painter.” And the visitor said: “Then paint me as an iconographer.”

Tatiana was surprised by the boldness of the stranger and replied: “I do not have any wood (a board) to paint you on.” At that moment, the visitor gave her a painting board and said: “Paint me!” As Tatiana painted the nun, she saw her robes turning golden, her face shining brightly, and heard her say: “O blessed Tatiana, after the Apostle and Evangelist Luke, you will paint me again.”

Tatiana realized that she was painting the Virgin Mary! She was disturbed and woke up. She immediately went to the Abbess and told her about the vision. The Abbess was skeptical and told her to go sleep again and paint an icon of the Virgin the next day.

However, as she returned, she saw light coming out of her cell and smelled a fragrance! She then alerted the Abbess, and together they entered the bright and fragrant cell, where they witnessed an even more astonishing miracle. The icon of the vision was inside the cell, real and Achieropita (not made by human hands)!!!

After this, the Virgin appeared again to the nun and said: “Take me down to my house, to Gethsemane.” And so it was done.

Since then, the Achieropita Holy Icon of the Virgin “THE JERUSALEM VIRGIN” has been located at the Sacred Shrine of the Theotokos’ Tomb in Gethsemane, and it works miracles.

On all three occasions when the Sacred Church in Gethsemane was flooded, the icon rose by itself from its marble throne and stood in the ventilation system, without being supported by anything!

Its miracles are countless, wherever it has gone.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
