Description

Serigraph of Panagia Glykophilousa on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful image of Panagia Glykophilousa, depicted lovingly holding the infant Christ in her arms. The base of the icon is made from naturally aged wood from Mount Athos.

According to tradition, the original icon of Panagia Glykophilousa was saved during the period of Iconoclasm and transported to Mount Athos. It is said to have belonged to Victoria, the wife of a senator, who, in her attempt to save the icon, threw it into the sea. Tradition holds that the icon floated upright on the waves until it finally reached the harbor of the Monastery of Philotheou, where it was discovered and retrieved by the monks. On Easter Monday, a procession of the icon takes place from the Holy Monastery to the site where it was found.

It is worth noting that the title “Glykophilousa” is one of the approximately 500 names attributed to the Virgin Mary, who is one of the most beloved figures in the Orthodox Church.

The naturally aged wood used for this particular icon comes from cells on Mount Athos that were renovated due to damage sustained over time and from the elements of nature. The old wood that was replaced was gathered by the monks, and after being restored using special techniques, it became the foundation for the creation of icons.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
