Description

Serigraph of the Theotokos of Sweet Kiss on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful icon of the Theotokos of Sweet Kiss, depicted lovingly holding the infant Christ in her arms. Carved halos adorn both figures, while the serigraph is placed on naturally aged wood from a cell of Mount Athos with centuries of history.

The title “Sweet Kiss” is one of about 500 names attributed to the Virgin Mary, who is the most beloved figure in the Orthodox Church.

According to tradition, the icon of the Theotokos of Sweet Kiss was saved from the iconoclasm and transported to Mount Athos. It is believed to have belonged to Victoria, the wife of a devout senator, who, in an effort to prevent the icon from being handed over, threw it into the sea. The tradition says that the icon floated upright on the waves until it finally reached the dock of the Holy Monastery of Philotheou, where it was found and received by the monks of the Monastery. Every Pascha Monday, the icon is carried in procession from the Monastery to the spot where it was found.

The Athonite monks craft these icons from old wood that comes from the renovations of cells on Mount Athos. The wood is carefully cut and preserved using methods known to the monks through the restoration of wooden iconostases. In this way, they continue to live and pass on the blessing of Mount Athos.

Through “Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons can be found in the hands of those who long to hold a piece of the living Athonite tradition.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
