Description

Icon of the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa on Naturally Aged Wood

A wonderful serigraph in which the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa is depicted with her warm, almond-shaped eyes gazing into the distance, as if seeing the sufferings and passions of her Son that are to come. She lovingly holds her only Son in her arms. Her posture emphasizes her human side. She tilts her head, and her face touches the face of her beloved Son. The close embrace of the two figures in the icon is an outward sign of the sorrow and mourning the Virgin experienced during the Crucifixion of her Son.

The icon also shows the Virgin’s love for her Son from her purely human perspective. She is surrounded by a sculpted halo, as is the young Jesus she holds in her arms. The cracks in the wood testify to the long and captivating history of the material.

The Athonite monks, who deeply venerate the historical and spiritual significance of the place where they live and practice, strive to make use of everything around them for the glory of God. Even the worn-out material objects that seem to have no use after the renovation of old cells have been utilized through the wisdom of the monks and transformed into beautiful icons that carry the blessing of Mount Athos.

Through the “Athonite Heritage,” these collectible icons can be found in the hands of people who long to hold a piece of the living Athonite tradition.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
