Description

Icon of the Sweet-Kissing Virgin on Naturally Aged Wood

A marvelous icon created using the silk screen technique, depicting the Sweet-Kissing Virgin on naturally aged wood from a restored Athonite cell, part of the extensive collection of iconographic works from the “Athonite Heritage”.

The original image of the Sweet-Kissing Virgin is one of those icons that survived the iconoclasm and was miraculously brought to Mount Athos. It was the possession of Victoria, the devout wife of the iconoclast senator Simeon, who, in order not to hand it over, threw it into the sea. The icon, floating upright on the waves, reached the harbor of the Monastery of Philotheou, where it was received with great honor and joy by the abbot and the monks, who had been notified through a revelation of the Theotokos. At the spot on the shore where the icon was placed, holy water sprang forth. Every year, on the Monday of Bright Week, a procession and blessing of the waters is held there.

This specific image of the Sweet-Kissing Virgin is an extraordinary example of the art of the Athonite monks.

It is worth noting that the title “Sweet-Kissing” is one of approximately 500 names attributed to the Virgin, who is one of the most beloved figures in the Orthodox Church. Surrounding the image are scenes from the life of the Virgin and Jesus, such as the Annunciation, the Nativity of Christ, His Crucifixion and Resurrection, and the Dormition of the Theotokos.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
