Description

Icon with the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa on Naturally Aged Wood

The icon of the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa on naturally aged wood is a stunning piece of art from Mount Athos.

The original icon of the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa is one of the 73 painted by the Evangelist Luke, and it is known for its many miracles. It is also double-sided, with the Crucifixion of Christ on the reverse. The icon is located at the left shrine of the katholikon of the Holy Monastery of Filotheou on Mount Athos and is one of the miraculous icons that were preserved during the iconoclasm.

According to tradition, this particular icon of the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa was saved by a devout and virtuous woman named Victoria, who secretly venerated the icons despite her husband being a high-ranking official. She kept the icon of Glykophilousa at her home, and one day, when iconoclasts were conducting a search, Victoria, pressured by her husband, took the icon and threw it into the sea to save it and prevent it from falling into the hands of the iconoclasts. Indeed, the icon reappeared days later at the harbor of the Monastery of Filotheou on Mount Athos.

The remarkable representation of the Virgin Mary Glykophilousa on canvas, the wood used for the icon, and even the cracks that run across its surface blend harmoniously, creating a magnificent result. This icon was painted by a monk iconographer from Mount Athos, and the wood comes from a renovated cell.

This is a collectible icon and, at the same time, a piece of the history of Mount Athos.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
