Description

Image of Panagia Glykofilousa on Naturally Aged Wood

A remarkable image of Panagia Glykofilousa, considered a collectible piece due to its base made from naturally aged wood from a cell on Mount Athos.

According to tradition, the original image of Panagia Glykofilousa was saved during the period of iconoclasm thanks to a woman named Victoria, the wife of a senator. She kept the image in her house and secretly venerated it despite the prohibition. During an iconoclast raid, Victoria took the image and went down to the sea. There, she prayed to the Virgin for the last time and, heartbroken, threw the image into the sea, hoping that it would be saved by some miracle. Indeed, the image did not sink but remained upright, floating on the water until it reached the harbor of the Monastery of Philotheou on Mount Athos. Since then, the miraculous icon has been kept in the monastery.

The naturally aged wood used for this image of Panagia comes from Mount Athos. It was replaced due to wear and tear after renovation works in an Athonite cell. The monks kept it, and after necessary restoration, they used it as the base for this specific image.

Since the image is handcrafted, and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The image is available upon order.
