An exceptional work, the Sweet Kiss of Angels, praises the Most Holy Theotokos, to whom the entire Athonite State is dedicated.

“The Sweet Kiss of Angels, the joy of the sorrowful,” is famously referenced in one of the hymns of the Dormition. The Sweet Kiss of Angels is the Virgin Mary, who brings joy and fulfillment because she is the one who brought Jesus Christ into the world.

In this icon, the Virgin Mary embraces Christ, while two angelic figures are visible above. The depiction of the Most Holy Theotokos is one of the favorite themes of the monks of Mount Athos, who, through this representation, express their boundless faith and love.

The naturally aged wood used for this icon comes from the Garden of the Virgin Mary, specifically from a monk’s cell that was renovated due to damage sustained over time. The wood was carefully worked by the hands of a monk, preserved, and ultimately became the base for this icon of the Sweet Kiss of Angels.

The icon holds double significance, not only because it represents the most beloved holy figure in Christianity, the Virgin Mary, but also because the wood comes from the very Garden of the Theotokos, carrying with it the blessings and prayers of the Athonite monks.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is processed manually, slight variations in the wood may occur, but the depiction itself remains unchanged.
