Description

Icon of the Holy Healer on Naturally Aged Wood

A magnificent serigraphy of the Holy Healer, with carved halos adorning the figures of the Virgin Mary and the young Christ.

The Virgin Mary is the loving mother of all people. Christians turn to Her to present their problems, suffering, and desires. Especially in times of illness, they ask the Virgin Mary to soothe their pain and heal them.

The Holy Healer is one of the many epithets of the Theotokos. She is the one who heals both body and soul, who gives courage and strength, and who relieves pain.

It is estimated that the Virgin Mary has about 500 epithets, which have been given to Her either due to the way She is depicted in icons, the location of the churches or monasteries dedicated to Her grace, the architectural style of Her churches, or the month in which Her feast is celebrated. Other names derive from hymns or miracles attributed to Her.

In Greece, specifically in Loutraki, Corinth, there is a sacred church dedicated to the Holy Healer. It is said that this church was built by local residents, who, witnessing the miracles attributed to this specific icon of the Theotokos, wanted to honor Her. Additionally, there is a historical monastery on Mount Taygetus dedicated to the Holy Healer.

The uniqueness of this particular icon lies in the aged wood on which the serigraphy of the Holy Healer was made. This is wood that was used for many years in Mount Athos as part of a cell. When it came time for renovation, the old wood was cut, preserved, and then carefully and artistically transformed into an icon, carrying the prayers of the Athonite fathers who lived in that cell outside of the Athonian state.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
