Icon of the Virgin Mary “Eleousa” on Naturally Aged Wood

The Virgin Mary is depicted in a bust, turned three-quarters to the left, holding Christ in her arms. She gently tilts her head towards her Son, while her left hand embraces Him lovingly.

Christ holds a closed scroll in one hand, while blessing with the other. The face of the Theotokos impresses with her large almond-shaped eyes, a slender long nose, and a small mouth with full lips.

The monks of Mount Athos, who deeply honor the historical and spiritual significance of the place where they live and practice, strive to make use of everything around them for the glory of God. Even the worn-out material objects that seem to have no use after the renovation of old cells were repurposed by the wisdom of the monks and transformed into beautiful icons, carrying the blessing of Mount Athos.
