Silk Screen Print of the Virgin Eleousa on Naturally Aged Wood

A collectible icon from the large collection of iconographic works of the “Athonite Heritage.” This particular icon features a depiction of the Virgin Eleousa and is an impressive example of the art of the Athonite monks.

The original icon of Eleousa was discovered thanks to the appearances of the Virgin to an eight-year-old boy, Athanasios Syros, in the Thessaly region in 1954. According to tradition, the Virgin appeared to the young boy twice, but neither his parents nor the villagers believed anything he said he had seen. In 1962, when a digging machine came to the village of Xyniada to open roads, the icon of the Virgin was found buried at the root of a strawberry tree, in the spot the eight-year-old boy had indicated years earlier. When the villagers saw the icon, they asked for forgiveness, both from the boy, who had grown up by then, but mostly from the Virgin herself.

It is believed that the icon dates back to the period of the Iconoclasm and was buried there to be saved from destruction.

The aesthetic superiority of this icon arises not only from the stunning silk screen technique but also from the wood used by the monk who created this magnificent work. The naturally aged wood used in these specific icons comes from restored cells of Mount Athos. These woods are preserved with special techniques by the monks and are used in the creation of these beautiful works of art.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
