Description

Icon of the Immaculate Virgin Mary on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful icon from Mount Athos, where in addition to the stunning colors, a special aesthetic is given to the image by the sculpted halo of the Virgin Mary in a golden hue, while that of the Child Christ, made with the same technique, is rendered in a silver color. In this icon, the Immaculate Virgin Mary holds Christ to her left, with her hand protectively beneath his body. With her right hand, she holds her Son’s hands.

The Immaculate Virgin Mary, in Orthodox iconography, is also called the Virgin of the Passion, because Christ gazes at the two Angels depicted on either side of the Virgin, holding in their hands the symbols of the Passion: the Cross, the Lance, and the Sponge. The name of the icon comes from the hymn of the “Apodeipnon” (Midnight Service), “Immaculate, Pure, Unstained…” composed by the monk Paul.

The uniqueness of this icon lies primarily in its wood, which comes from a cell in Mount Athos, thus continuing to live on and transmit the blessing of Mount Athos.

Through the “Athonite Heritage,” this series of collectible icons can be found in the hands of those who long to hold a piece of the living Athonite tradition.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is treated by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
