Description

The Last Supper on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful icon of the Last Supper on naturally aged wood from an Athonite cell. The monk who created this work respects the age of the wood and faithfully represents the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos.

On the Thursday before Jesus is led to the cross, He shares the Last Supper with His disciples in Jerusalem, and Judas betrays Him. Before the meal begins, Jesus washes the feet of all His disciples, wanting to teach everyone humility through this act. Then, He sat at the table, took the bread in His hands and said, “Take, eat.” He did the same with the cup of wine, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, for this is My blood. Do this in remembrance of Me.” In this way, He gave humanity the mystery of the Holy Eucharist.

The meaning of the Last Supper lies in the two facets of love: joy and sorrow, light and darkness. Christ’s love for His disciples and for humanity brings redemption from passions. However, at the same time, Judas’ love for thirty pieces of silver is destructive and leads him from light to darkness. On Holy Thursday, the Church commemorates the Last Supper, the moment when the Lord Himself delivered the mystery of the Holy Eucharist to humanity.

As the icon is handmade and the wood is treated by hand, there may be small variations in the wood, though not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon request.
