Description

Image of the Dormition of the Theotokos on Naturally Aged Wood

This exquisite image represents the Dormition of the Theotokos, an event of great significance in the Orthodox Church, celebrated with immense reverence on August 15th, often referred to as the “Pascha of the Summer.”

According to church tradition, after the Crucifixion of Jesus, the Theotokos (Mother of God) resided in the home of the Evangelist John. It was there that she learned from an angel of the Lord, likely Archangel Gabriel, of her impending death, three days before it occurred. After praying on the Mount of Olives, she distributed her belongings to two widowed neighbors. The Dormition took place in the home of John, and a cloud gathered the Apostles from all places, bringing them to her bedside. The only apostle not present was Thomas, who upon returning requested the tomb be opened so that he too might venerate her. When the tomb was opened three days later, it was found empty, and it is said that the Virgin Mary was resurrected and ascended into heaven.

This particular image is a remarkable work of art. The wood used for the base comes from an authentic piece of Mount Athos, specifically from a restored monastic cell. Through skilled craftsmanship, it was transformed into a sacred icon, carrying a piece of the Athonite heritage with it.

As the image is handcrafted, slight variations in the wood may occur, though this does not affect the depiction itself.
