Description

Icon of Christ Pantocrator on Naturally Aged Wood

The icon of Christ Pantocrator is an excellent example of the creativity and skills of the monks on Mount Athos, as the wood on which it is crafted was once part of a cell where renovation work was carried out.

The epithet Pantocrator is used to refer to Jesus Christ in Orthodox Christian iconography. The image of the Pantocrator is traditionally painted on the central dome (cupola) of all Byzantine churches, while in churches without domes, in the basilica style, the image is painted at the center of the ceiling.

The Pantocrator Christ is usually depicted as stern yet full of love, with His right hand raised in blessing and His left hand holding the Gospel at His chest. Surrounding Him are angels who sing praises to His glory throughout the ages.

In this particular icon, Christ Pantocrator wears a sculpted halo in a silver tone around His head.

For decades, the wood used for this icon was a piece from an Athonite cell that was renovated. The monks selected pieces of this wood, which had aged naturally, to use it once again. These pieces were carefully preserved using methods typically employed for wooden iconostasis, while the final shaping was done by adding the serigraph. The wood’s grain, cracks, knots, protrusions, and other features were left untouched. The color scheme respects the wood’s age and faithfully reflects the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The wood’s grains, cracks, knots, protrusions, and other features remained intact. Color-wise, the composition respects the wood’s age and faithfully conveys the Byzantine tradition of Mount Athos.
