Icon of Jesus Christ the Great High Priest on Naturally Aged Wood

This beautiful representation depicts Christ enthroned as the Great High Priest, wearing priestly garments.

It is an amazing reproduction of a 17th-century icon, which is located in the historic Monastery of Sinai. Jesus is depicted blessing, and this particular representation of the Lord in priestly vestments originates from compositions of the Palaiologian period.

As the apostle Paul famously writes: “We have a Great High Priest who has ascended into heaven, Jesus the Son of God. We do not have a High Priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses. On the contrary, he has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin… Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”

The base of this icon is a piece of wood sourced from a restored cell of Mount Athos, which has been preserved using the techniques employed by the monks. It was repurposed as the base for this icon. The monks gather old wood pieces from doors, window shutters, and even furniture in the cells, and with great care and dedication, they transform them into beautiful icons. These are collectible icons of the “Athos Heritage,” crafted by Athonite fathers.

Since the icon is handmade and the wood is processed by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
