Description

Icon of the Annunciation of the Theotokos on Naturally Aged Wood

A beautiful serigraph depicting the Annunciation of the Theotokos. This is one of the most important feasts in Orthodoxy, as it marks the beginning of salvation for mankind.

Nine months before the birth of Christ, on March 25, the Church celebrates the Annunciation of the Theotokos.

The Feast of the Annunciation of the Theotokos is a Despotic-Theotokian feast. This means it is Despotic because it refers to the Lord Christ, who was conceived in the womb of the Theotokos, and Theotokian because it refers to the person who contributed to the conception and incarnation of the Word of God, namely the Virgin Mary.

The Annunciation of the Theotokos is essentially the joyful news that the Virgin Mary received from the Archangel Gabriel, announcing that she would bring Jesus Christ into the world in a miraculous way. According to the Evangelist Luke, the event of the Annunciation took place in Nazareth. Sent by God, the Archangel Gabriel meets Mary at the place where she lived and greets her with the words: “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you.” When the Archangel tells her she will conceive, Mary is astonished and asks how this will happen since she is not married. The Archangel reassures her that the Holy Spirit will take care of everything. Mary’s response, “Behold the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word,” shows her absolute submission and trust in God’s will.

Through the Annunciation, God’s plan to save the world is revealed to both the angels and humans, through the incarnation of His Son.

This is an exceptional icon on naturally aged wood, clearly displaying its age and carrying a piece of the history of Mount Athos, as it is made from the wood of a renovated cell of the Holy Mountain.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.

The icon is available upon order.
