The Archangel Michael (November 8th) is depicted in all his glory as the Commander of the Heavenly Hosts. In the field of the icon, the words “THE ARCHANGEL MICHAEL” are written in capital letters. The movement of the Archangel is emphasized by his large wings. His face has youthful features, highlighted by the soft modeling of the flesh, which has been painted with dense brushstrokes following the Byzantine tradition. He holds a shield and a fiery scepter, which symbolize the authority given to him by God over the world.

The faithful and devoted Archangel Michael is the protector of the poor and helpless human being. He defends them from the wickedness and abyssal hatred of the devil. In countless instances, his protection has been manifested through miraculous events. Most notably, as the Church teaches, he guards the souls of people who depart to the Lord, protecting them from the attacks of demons and their attempts to prevent the souls’ journey towards God.

In Mount Athos, even the perishable material objects continue to live after their initial use. The monks utilize everything for their sustenance and for the glory of God.

This is the uniqueness of this particular icon. The old wood on which the image of Archangel Michael is placed in serigraphy once belonged to an Athonite cell, which has been carefully and artfully transformed into an icon. The cracks in the old wood, where the image is placed, bear witness to the years it lived in Mount Athos.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
