Description

Icon of Archangel Michael on Naturally Aged Wood

A stunning silkscreen print of Archangel Michael, the Commander of the Heavenly Hosts, portrayed as the supreme leader of the angelic powers. Archangel Michael plays a pivotal role in both the Old and New Testaments.

He is the one who saved the angelic hosts from their fall with the famous cry: “Let us attend! Let us stand well, let us stand with fear.” Due to his boldness and devotion to God, the Holy Trinity appointed him as the “Prince of the Heavenly Hosts” and Archistrategos. He is also renowned for leading the heavenly hosts in proclaiming the Trisagion hymn: “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of His glory.” Additionally, it is believed that it was by God’s command that Archangel Michael expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

Archangel Michael is a significant figure in biblical events. He announced to Abraham the need for the sacrifice of his son Isaac, later preventing the act. He also intervened in the destruction of Sodom, rescuing Lot and his family, and protected Jacob from his brother Esau. Furthermore, Archangel Michael led the Israelites out of Egypt, appearing as a cloud by day and a fire by night, guiding them toward the Promised Land.

In the New Testament, he is the one who will announce the Second Coming of Christ, leading an army of angels in battle against “the great dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan.” He is often depicted holding a spear, though in some representations, he also holds a scepter, symbolizing the authority granted to him by God.

Archangel Michael is also the patron saint of the Air Force, and his feast day, celebrated on November 8, is shared with Archangel Gabriel.

The naturally aged wood, sourced from a restored monastic cell on Mount Athos, provides this icon with a unique aesthetic and collectible value, while also bringing a piece of the rich history of the Holy Mountain beyond its borders.
