Description

Serigraph of Archangel Michael on Naturally Aged Wood

This serigraph depicts Archangel Michael, the commander of the heavenly hosts, who appears as the Archistrategos and plays a pivotal role in both the Old and New Testaments. He is venerated as the patron saint of the Air Force and is celebrated together with Archangel Michael on November 8th.

Archangel Michael is often depicted holding a spear, but in many representations, he also holds a scepter, symbolizing the authority granted to him by God.

Archangel Michael plays a key role in both the Old and New Testaments.

He was the one who saved the angelic hosts from falling with the famous declaration, “Let us attend! Let us stand well, let us stand with fear.” For his boldness, the Triune God gave him the position of “Ruler of the Heavenly Hosts,” Archistrategos, and Commander. He, along with all the angels, proclaimed the Trisagion Hymn: “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Sabaoth, heaven and earth are full of His glory.” Additionally, it is believed that by God’s command, Archangel Michael expelled the First Humans from Paradise.

He was the one who announced to Abraham the need to sacrifice his son Isaac and later stopped the sacrifice. He was also the one who appeared to Lot, rescuing him and his family from the destruction of Sodom, and to Jacob, saving him from his brother Esau, who sought to kill him. Moreover, Archangel Michael was the one who led the people of Israel out of Egypt, appearing as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, guiding them to the Promised Land.

In the New Testament, he is the one who will announce the second coming of Jesus Christ. He is prophesied to lead an army of angels in battle in heaven against “the great dragon, the ancient serpent, who is the Devil, and Satan” and his demons.

The iconographer monk who created this image of Archangel Michael used a piece of naturally aged wood, which gives the icon a unique aesthetic and collectible value, while also carrying a piece of the centuries-old history of the Athonite community beyond Mount Athos.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction of the image.
