Description

Serigraph of Archangel Michael on Naturally Aged Wood

A stunning serigraph of Archangel Michael, the Commander of the Heavenly Hosts.

Archangel Michael appears as the Supreme Commander and plays a pivotal role in both the Old and New Testaments.

He was the one who saved the angelic hosts from their fall with the phrase, Let us attend! Let us stand well, let us stand in fear. For this boldness, the Triune God gave him the position of “Prince of the angelic Hosts,” Archistrategos and Commander. He, along with all the angels, proclaimed the Thrice-Holy Hymn, “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God of Hosts, heaven and earth are full of Your glory”. Additionally, it is believed that by God’s command, the Protoplasts were expelled from Paradise by Archangel Michael.

He was the one who announced to Abraham the need to sacrifice his son Isaac, only to later prevent the sacrifice. He appeared to Lot and saved him and his family from the destruction of Sodom. He also appeared to Jacob when he saved him from his brother Esau, who sought to kill him. Furthermore, Archangel Michael was the one who led the Israelites out of Egypt, appearing as a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, guiding them to the Promised Land.

In the New Testament, he is the one who will announce the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. He is prophetically depicted leading a host of angels in battle in heaven against “the great Dragon, that ancient serpent, called the Devil and Satan,” and his demons.

He is honored as the patron of the Air Force. Typically, he is depicted holding a spear, although in many representations, he also holds a scepter, symbolizing the authority granted to him by God.

His feast day is celebrated on November 8, alongside the other Archangels.

The naturally aged wood, from a restored Athonite cell, on which the icon is painted, gives it a unique aesthetic and collectible value, while also conveying a piece of the centuries-old history of the Athonite community beyond Mount Athos.
