Bartholomew, or Nathanael, was one of the twelve disciples of Christ. He was from Cana in Galilee. It is believed that he is the same person as Nathanael, as in the Synoptic Gospels, Philip is always mentioned alongside Bartholomew, without any reference to Nathanael, while in the Gospel of John, Philip is constantly mentioned with Nathanael, with no mention of Bartholomew. According to Syrian tradition, he was named Jesus and had to change his name when he joined the circle of Christ’s disciples.

The naturally aged wood, sourced from a restored Athonite cell, on which the image is crafted, gives it a unique aesthetic and collectible value, while also conveying a piece of its long history beyond the Athonite State.

As the icon is handmade and the wood processing is done by hand, there may be slight variations in the wood, but not in the depiction.
